Lookout Observatory is dedicated to helping community members of all ages and interest levels understand and enjoy astronomy. UNC Asheville and the Astronomy Club of Asheville host events at the observatory that are open to the public, as well as scheduled visits for schools and other organized groups. Join us at our next event or contact us if you are interested in scheduling a group event.
Next Public Stargaze: April 16, 2021 (virtual event)
On Friday, April 16, 2021 at 8:00pm we invite you to join us for a 2-hour LIVE VIRTUAL stargazing event, in association with the NC Science Festival’s Statewide Star Party.
Our local event will include live-streamed views from the telescopes at Lookout Observatory (weather permitting) and a rain-or-shine interactive scavenger hunt through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s map of the local universe.
The event will be delivered by astronomers and student docents from UNC Asheville’s Lookout Observatory and the Astronomy Club of Asheville. It will be suitable for children ages 6+ (under supervision of an adult), the general public, teachers and educators.
Pre-registration for the April 16th virtual stargaze is required. To participate, please register at this link by April 15th, and we will follow up with information about how to join the event remotely.
Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still unable to hold in-person stargaze events until further notice. However, if you’d like to be notified as soon as we resume events, please join our mailing list by filling out the Lookout Observatory Mailing List Form. You will then receive an email about registering for our next stargaze, which we hope will be announced soon. And be sure to like us on Facebook to keep up to date with what’s happening at Lookout, with the Astronomy Club of Asheville, and in the universe!
If you would like to be removed from the mailing list, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Please park in the Reuter Center lot (P10) on UNC Asheville’s campus (campus map). Shuttles will run at regular intervals to transport people to and from the observatory.
Accessible parking is available at the observatory. If you will require its use, please contact us after you have registered so we can make the proper arrangements.
Because observatory events may be impacted by the weather, always check the homepage two hours prior to the beginning of the stargaze to ensure the sky will be clear and the observatory will be open. If a Friday viewing is postponed, the backup day will be the following Saturday, and your reservation will still be valid for the backup date. Further details regarding the rescheduling, including parking and shuttle information, will be included with the postponement information.
During public stargazes, the observatory becomes an outdoor, open-air facility. Please dress appropriately for being outside an extended period of time. In the winter, wear warm clothes with several layers to ensure you enjoy your stargazing experience.
If you would like to schedule your group for an event, please contact Lookout Observatory at 828.250.3958 or email email@example.com.
The universe is constantly in motion, which means there is always something in the sky to view. Check this page regularly for details about special events, or like Lookout Observatory’s Facebook page to learn about upcoming events. We love to watch comets, eclipses, and other celestial events!
